We%26#39;ll be travelling to Oahu, Maui and Kauai in June. In Kauai, we%26#39;ll be driving probably right around the island with our hire car.
How cold is it expected to get in one or any area?
What sort of clothes should we be packing? (A heavy jacket/light jumper?)
And out of 4 days around the island, how many days would we probably be rugged up for the cold, if at all? (Based 10mins from Lihue (I think!), doing a helicopter ride %26amp; doing day trips to most areas of island).
Packing warm clothes in June?
Are you sure you are coming to Hawaii?? (kidding) June is our summer and can be pretty hot daytime.Unless you are planning to go to the top of Haleakela on Maui (10,000 ft or so) the warmest thing you need in June is shorts.
Our typical June temps will be 85-90 F days and 75-80 at night at sea level. Even at the top of our mountain on Kauai (4500 ft or so) there%26#39;s no need for a coat in daytime in summer. Guessing it might be 70 ish.
If you are very cold natured, a light jacket at night is more than enough. In winter. I only bother when it%26#39;s raining but she who must be obeyed gets cold when it drops below 75 and the car window is open.
Packing warm clothes in June?
We went to Maui at this time last year and I brought a couple of light cardigans/jumpers to wear in the evenings in case it got a bit chily but I didnt wear any of them.
I think the only time I wore one was when we cycled down Haleakala because of some light rain and the wind. And once we were at the bottom ready to cycle along the roads everyone was boiling hot and stripping them off!
So I really wouldnt bring more than one or two.
thanks guys!
I guess I%26#39;ll just pack the warm clothes for when I land back in Aus, hehehe!
You could layer yourself from Melbourne and peel off layers as the temperature rises, stowing excess in room you have left in your carry-on bag.
You%26#39;ll only need a light jacket if it rains or if the restaurant a/c is cool. June is perfect.
We come in June all of the time. I pack a light weight sweater (not a jumper, but something that buttons down the front with 3/4 sleeves) to wear over a sundress with sandals for dinner. Last June, I took it with me to Plantation Gardens but never wore it. If you drive up to the Waimea Canyon and it%26#39;s fogged in (as it does often) you might want to bring that sweater with you then, too. Other than that, it will be very nice and warm (not nearly as hot as it get in Oz during your summers). Shorts, t-shirts and tennis shoes or sandals are the norm for siteseeing. Bathing suit and cover ups for the beach or resort pool.
You should know that you can not drive all the way around Kaua`i. The road only goes about 2/3 of the way around, skipping the Na Pali coast.
You might want a light jacket or jumper for going up to Ke`e and doing the helicopter tour, especially if you fly doors-off, but I doubt it. It all depends on how easily you feel cold.
when we go to Hawaii, usually in US winter. I tkae a sweater or something to get on and off plane in Oregon. and it is nice on the plane. I leave coat in car and bear it til we get back to car. I took coat a time or two early on but just takes space
you may need simple rain gear, but om 5 trips that was once and we just put up with it
If I use while there do not remember. probably not, and we go im our winter.
Our last trip to Hawaii was October 2006...I brought way too many ';warm'; clothes...I would suggest packing light...buy sweatshirt or jacket ...No long pants were ever needed or wanted....fyi...
If you rent (hire) a convertible or a Jeep, you may consider bringing/buying a lightweight longsleeve top or cardigan as others have mentioned - sometimes the wind is chilly with the top down/off. I bought a zip up hoodie at a shop in Hanalei and it was perfect. I always bring a light colored long sleeve polypro top (like Patagonia or REI MTS) to wear on boat trips - dries quickly when wet (you can even snorkel in it if the water is chilly) and protects you from sunburn.
For the heli tour, I wore capri pants, a t-shirt and a rain jacket, and I was fine (ours was doors off - a regular flight would not require the jacket).
