County Council poised to pass vacation rentals ordinance

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

Well, the front page of our local paper today has an article about the marathon-session yesterday at the County Building in regards to passing an ordinance that strives to restore the balance between primary residences and single-family transient vacation rentals on Kaua%26#39;i.

Apparently they spent the whole day listening to pleas on both sides -- it went into the evening hours and as of the time the paper went to press -- they were still hashing out last-minute amendments.

We were told -- stay tuned for more information!

So hopefully we%26#39;ll have more news about this tomorrow -- if so, I%26#39;ll try to post it here if time allows.

this ia a good step to stop the out of control rentals on all islands and scams to visitors... This is good for all...Honolulu really needs this...so do we..on the Big Island.

By the way I was on Kauai last week and noticed that almost every . beach park I saw had eliminated camping and overnight use... Places I saw several years ago are gone...

Looks like Kauai istruing to manage its rapidly gorwth in visitors ....

Also the raod to Polihale is gated and closed to the public.

Apparently due to the rutted road conditons from our winter rains, and also the broken down state of the restrooms.

The BLM says that they are working on solutions and this will not be a permanent situation.

Denny

Dan,

Which beaches were you looking at did you notice that had banned overnight use ? Might help those planning on doing some camping to know.

The two major places that the visitors might have seen a few temts were anini, and ha%26#39;ena beach park up north.

We were up at anini a while back and noticed that the few tents on pevious visits there. that looked permanent at the far left end , were no longer there.

We were wondering what had occured or did we just happen to be there the day of the week they had to vacate.

The ordinance used to be that they had to remove their campsites/tents one scheduled day per week. They would do that and then return the next day.

A lot of families used to go up to Haena beach park to camp out for a couple of days, as did some visitors.

Thanks for the scoops, cedrtainly will help out those who planned to come here and camp out at the state park beaches.

Polihale beach access road is closed and gated now, so that takes care of that campsite also.

For those interested in camping, you might give a call to the Divison of State Parks, 808-274-3444 to get permits and find where you can do some camping.

Hope this might help those who plan to camp out.

I just read that article and it still seems like they don%26#39;t know what they want to do. I am wondering if these rental houses pay the accommodation and transient taxes like I have to do? If so, the revenue for Kauai will decrease. This is going to be so tough to enforce don%26#39;t you think? If your neighbor doesn%26#39;t want a rental next to them they will be the ones to scream bloody murder. This is why I bought in the VDA as I knew this was coming.

Thanks Amber. I was hoping they would pass a version that would suspend enforcement on noncomplying rentals for a while, but it doesn%26#39;t sound like that was the case.

Purely selfish reasons: the place we have rented in the past is a preexisting noncomplying rental! I realize that others have more important reasons for their positions, pro or con, on rentals outside the VDAs.

I doubt that Kauai is planning to ban overnite camping at the existing county parks that currently allow it. I think the locals in particular would not allow this to happen. According to personnel in the Lihue office, the locals camp out(especially during summer months) as sort of a vacation because they cant afford to go on any vacations that involve substantial money. I can see why......everything is so expensive on Kauai/Maui. Also, Anini is closed every Tuesday and everyone has to vacate Tues nite. That could be why no tents were seen on a particular day because it is a very popular campsite.
