Grocery question for a local

Our flight won%26#39;t arrive to Maui until 4:30 p.m., which is 5 hours earlier than our eastern time, so I know we will be tired. We were thinking about stopping at K-mart or Wal-mart for some groceries for condo (sandwich stuff, breakfast stuff, don%26#39;t need bulk from costco). I was wondering, because we will be tired and hungry no doubt, would it be that much of a price difference if we just grab something to eat, go on to condo, and go the next day to Star Market, close to condo for groceries?

Thanks!

Grocery question for a local

Our Walmart and K-mart are not superstores, so the grocery selection is very limited. Great for condiments, Walmart-brand snack foods and odds and ends, but not much else. Star Market is the priciest of our three grocery chains, but there is something to be said for the convenience, especially while on vacation.

Grocery question for a local

We usually stay at the Westin villas, and haven%26#39;t ever stopped at Costco, Walmart or Kmart. We have done 4 people, this last time was just my husband and I. Once we get outta the airport, we just continue down the highway to the Lahaina Cannery where there is a full market and a Long right next door.l We are able to pick up water, soda, alcohol, a few breakfast items, snacks and dinner items for one night... plus anything we mighta forgotten or a beach chair or two, if they are on sale.

So groceries can be picked up on the way - enough to tide you over anyways...

Have a great time.. We are looking forward to our Sept 21 vacation!!!

DO NOT EAT OUT no matter how hungry you are. It WILL cost significantly more than buying groceries at Star Market.

If you never eat out while on Maui you will save money !!!

Stop at a grocery near your lodgings. Make your list now as you will be bleary-eyed after the flight. Bring along some twists of salt, sugar, spices you especially like so you won%26#39;t have to buy a year%26#39;s supply at Maui prices. Some condos are set up for a minimum stay (usually four nights). If you are staying longer, bring along extra garbage bags; allow two per day as you want to get garbage out of the condo before bugs are interested.

Another reason to shop nearby is the heat. If you shop Kahului you should buy ice and use a cooler to transport perishables.

If you don%26#39;t eat out on Maui then you are missing quite a bit... some of the best memories for us were of great restaurants.

If you never eat out, who does the cooking?

If it is a vacation don%26#39;t you BOTH deserve time off???? ;-)

Shop locally the first day and you can do the rest of your shopping the next day.

give yourself a break, you are on vacation. stop at marco%26#39;s, have dinner or in the same parking lot is a small mexican place called pinata%26#39;s that is very tasty and cheap, all very close to the airport. just past the kmart intersection on the left. buy your food the nest day when you have rested. a vacation should be better spent enjoying your time than worry over an extra 1.25 extra you spent at safeway for something. the estra money it may or may not cost to buy close to your hotel is well worth it to me, than to have to waste my day driving to costco to save the buck twentyfive. I would rather be at the beach

sorry the food places are on the right. kmart is on the left

I usually go to the store the day after I arrive.

Just grab something to eat your first night at a restaurant and then shop later at a store near the condo. My husband was so tired (and hungry) when we arrived at Maui that he made us stop and eat supper at McDonalds! You can always do fast food if you want.

We shop at Safeway and find it has pretty good prices-especially if you sign up for a Safeway card.

Well, I%26#39;m not a local, but have spent many vacations in a Kihei condo and would prefer any other supermarket to Star. You can do very well at a number of spots, like Stella Blues, Alexander%26#39;s or Cheeseburger in Paradise after you get settled the evening you arrive. Next day, a breakfast at Stella Blues or the Kihei Cafe and a stop at Safeway or Foodland later onafter the beach could work well too.

We have also had good breakfast%26#39;s at Charley%26#39;s in Paia and then shopped at Mana Foods on Baldwin. A stop for coffee at Anthony%26#39;s is a must

Mana Foods has organic and health food items plus prepared foods and deli and is a genuine old style grocery, worth a visit just for the experience. There are some good prices here as well. Why stress on holiday when you can shop after a bit of sun when shade and air-conditioning will be welcome.

My husband enjoys Safeway in Kihei but I like Foodland in Lahaina, and so we usually fit in a bit of shopping after an excursion. There is a gorgeous new Foodland Upcountry too.

The %26#39;locals%26#39; watch for the specials and shop around..but for just breakfast items, hit the supermarket and look for the busiest places for meals out. If the place is busy, it is usually pretty good.

have a great trip.
