Turtles

I will be so disappointed if I don%26#39;t see any sea turtles on my first trip to Hawaii. Can anyone help me out here with the best place to find these beautiful creatures? I will be staying part of the time at UH and part of the time in a Waikiki hotel? Plan on renting a car one day and taking the bus the rest of the time.

Turtles

Laniakea Beach

This thread has a couple of good driving tours %26amp; says where Laniakea Beach is:

Other places to see turtles:

Kuilima Cove at Turtle Bay Resort

Sometimes at Hanauma Bay

Halona Cove, just below Halona Blowhole

Turtles

One time when we were staying in July, we saw them swimming around the jetty in front of our condo at the Waikiki Shore. Have also seen them while we were snorkeling at Shark%26#39;s Cove, and from the beach around Mokuleia.

Also saw them in the water off Waikiki Beach. We were at the Sheraton, if that helps.

There is also a small beach on the North Shore with an ';unofficial'; name of Turtle Beach if I have it right. We went a few times, on the way to Waimea, and the turtles came out in the afternoons. Volunteers worked there, to rope off protected areas around the turtles, but you can still see them. FWIW.

Sea turtles are a lot more common now than they were. You can see them pretty much anywhere at the North Shore. We rented a cottage just before Waimea Bay and swam with them every day. I would have stepped on a baby about the size of a dinner plate if my daughter had not alerted me in time when I was coming out of the water. Just look for them near the shore early in the morning or at sunset. They are very cute to watch. Just remember that it is illegal to get close enough to touch them and they have a very sharp mouth. You could loose a finger or two.

We see small-ish ones (18';24';) at Point Panic where there is a body surfing area. It%26#39;s the Diamond Head end of Kaka`ako Park, which is located ocean side of corner of Ala Moana Blvd and Ward Ave.

You have to really watch for them. Once you see one stick its head up out of the water and go under, count to about 3 minutes until it resurfaces again.

Another good place is Ko`Olina (Marriott Resort) Hotel. In lagoon #1-A, I have snorkeled with turtles a couple of times. These are the big guys.

I echo Sheila response concerning Ko%26#39;Olina. You%26#39;ll be able to swim within a few feet of turtles and the coves are absolutely beautiful. A great place for just vegging on a beach.

You want to give them their space. There are places were you can stand on some rocks and watch turtles swim close by without bothering them.

I swam (within a respectable distance) with a couple of turtles at Hanuma Bay. Also saw one at the Ko%26#39;Olina Lagoon as well as several at Turtle Beach.

I think you will be able to find them. They are around.

We were on Oahu the last week in August and saw turtles both times we went to Haunama Bay, at Laie Pt. , Sharks Cove and also one at Waikiki Beach out in a bunch of people. Unfortunately, we were not able to spend much time on the North Shore so we didn%26#39;t get to visit some of the other beaches where turtle sitings are common.
