I%26#39;m just beginning research for our 1st trip, but Frommer%26#39;s says ';the last week of April %26amp; early May'; is exceptionally crowded due to Japanese holidays. Does this affect all islands, all of Oahu, or mostly Honolulu?
We were thinking of coming for about 3-4 weeks in April or May.
Japanese ';Golden Week'; crowds?
Not to worry, there are not that many more visitors from Japan to Hawaii during that week as there are other weeks.
Japanese ';Golden Week'; crowds?
When I was in travel agent school (went to school, never became an agent) we were taught to totally avoid booking folks during the Golden Week - especially Oahu. Apparently, it%26#39;s a string of holidays, so it%26#39;s a good time to take a vacation if you are from Japan.
Frommer%26#39;s needs to update their info.....
Years ago ';Golden Week'; saw a noticeable surge in Japanese tour groups, particularly in Waikiki, and there was a lot of joint-marketing by the hotels and visitors bureau to attract them. To call it ';exceptionally crowded'; even in the busiest years would be a large overstatement.
But that time has long passed and Hawaii is not as favored a Golden Week destination anymore for a variety of reasons. Guam and Australia are now two of the bigger recipients of those travelers.
Overall, April (after Spring Break) and May are two of the slowest months for tourism in the islands. But an exceptional time to visit weather-wise.
Thanks very much!
We like slow tourist times the best ..... when is Spring Break ?
Spring break used to be the week before and after Easter -- and for most kindergarten through 12th graders, this is still the case. Spring break for college student is usually in March and CAN coinside with Easter break.
FYI -- we visited Oahu and Maui during the second week in May one year, and it was the best ever!
Thanks, BLBL. Spring break in Oregon seems to include everybody from K through college and is usually around the end of March. It makes for an extremely busy time on the coast .... then we get the Washington visitors a week later!
