Must dos in Kauai?

You have done some great research, and pleased to see that you are getting off the ship and exploring kauai. None of that spend your day at K-mart, or Wall-mart. Good on ya, lass.

You are only going to be on the garden island for an extremely short time. If you like your visit to Kauai, please come back for a nice long stay..

With what you mentioned and your sked.......

FIRST DAY :

HELO TOUR;

Will give you a superb and wonderful circle island view of Kauai.

Excellent .

ANOTHER IDEA:

INTER ISLAND Helicopter: doors off out of Port Allen Airport on an EARLY morning circle island tour. That airport is on the west side.

You could be much closer to be able to easily drive up to Wiamea Canyon and the lookout for great photos.

Then : Dive back down the hill , and visit Koloa Town, Spouting Horn, and Poipu Beach for snorkeling, or just getting some sun.

That might work a bit better with your time limitations.

Not sure when you ship pulls in, and if you get one full day, and then a half day before it departs the next afternoon.

Also, for the tubbing, it can get booked up several days ahead, so you might take care of reservations by phone on your own, well prior to heading over here. Probably he same plan for all booked activities.

Last day:

TUBING: Very mild easy and fun kick back cruise down the irragation ditch and thru tunnels, plus swimming, and having lunch.

This will definitely take about 3.5 hrs or so. Plus about 15 minutes to drive up to Back Country Adventues in Hanamaulu. Not far from the ship.

After tubing, you might like to visit Kalapaki Beach, for some playing in the calm water, and maybe having lunch and a libation at Dukes barefoot bar. We go to kalapaki often, and after some sun, stop at Dukes. ( down stairs , nice, open, friendly, view, etc. )

This is at the Marriot Hotel in Lihue, and you can WALK to and from easily from the ship.

Just some ideas.....do pick up the Ultimate Kauai Guide book on the mainland, it will really be of great assistance, especially with wonderful maps and directions....you do not have time to get lost....and you want to be very efficient with your very narrow time line.

Hve fun !

Denny

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

So you are going to be here for just one day? I%26#39;d concentrate on what is important to you -- lots of folks think the only way to see Kaua%26#39;i is by helicopter -- they are very popular and all of the companies have ';pick up'; at the harbor for the cruise ships.

You don%26#39;t indicate if you are going to have a car? I%26#39;m going to assume you do and if so:

You could take an early morning helicopter tour that leaves from the Lihu%26#39;e airport area -- then either drive up to the North Shore and see the sights along the way (Kilauea Lighthouse, Hanalei Valley and town, Ke%26#39;e Beach) -- or go in the opposite direction and head to the South Shore and West Side (Waimea Canyon).

Personally if you try to do too much and see the entire island all you%26#39;ll be doing is seeing the island from the inside of a car and be stressed attempting to do so -- so I%26#39;d suggest giving yourself a little time to stop someplace and enjoy the sights -- whichever part of the island is more interesting to you.

I guess my ';pick'; (even though I live on the South Shore!) would be to drive up to Hanalei -- it is certainly the most ';tropical'; part of the island and I think visually it is the most imposing -- if you discount Waimea Canyon, which is ';apples and oranges'; from the North Shore.

Hope any of this helps!

Koloagirl and kalapakidooley -

Your advice sounds great - but maybe you can help me with a suimilar question?

We are also on Kauai on a cruise ship with a full day and then a half day (have to return rental car and be back onboard by 1:00pm on Day 2) - First trip to Hawaii

We want to spend some time at Waimea Canyon and on a South Shore beach, but also want to spend some time exploring the North Shore.

My question is this - should we do Waimea Canyon/Spouting Horn/Poipu Beach on Day 1? Would we have enough time on Day 2 to see anything of the North Shore? Or should we do North Shore on Day 1 and Waimea Canyon/South Shore on Day 2?

Trying to see as much as possible of your beautiful island as possible while still relaxing and enjoying.

Mahalo Nui for your help!

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

Personally even though I live here in the Po%26#39;ipu Beach area -- I would say that your full day would be better spent going up to the North Shore and the 1/2 day to Waimea Canyon and Spouting Horn.

The North Shore is so much what people think Kaua%26#39;i ';should'; look like when they think about it -- green, lush mountains towering over taro fields and with meandering roads going over one-lane bridges

all along the mostly visible oceanline.

I would take a full day and just take your time driving up to Ke%26#39;e Beach (the end of the road) -- there is a lot to see on the way (Kilauea Lighthouse, Hanalei Town and Bay, Hanalei Valley lookout, etc.) -- you would just be too terribly rushed to do it in half a day.

Having said that -- your 1/2 day could be spent first of all driving early up to Waimea Canyon where usually by 10am the clouds are rolling in -- then you can take your time somewhat and drive down to Spouting Horn here on the South Shore - Po%26#39;ipu Beach Park is nice, but not really someplace that I%26#39;d say is a ';must see'; - it is a very popular beach park here, but as far as just driving by -- no, nothing spectacular. -- and it isn%26#39;t a long drive to Spouting Horn and once you are there -- it will take you more time to go through the vendors stalls than it does to watch ';Spouting Horn'; spout!!

Hope any of this helps you!

Janet

Must dos are the Helicopter Tour. It is phenominal! I would do it over and over again. There is just no way you can see Kauai without doing this tour. We drove up to the Canyon on our last day and wished that we had done it earlier. It was breathtaking. Poipu is a great area with a great beach, restaurants, shopping, hotels, and condos. Princeville area is also beautiful to visit with Hanalei just beyond. It is so hard to decide when you only have a full day and night. Kauai is for sure the most beautiful of the islands. Good luck and enjoy.
