I am going over Thanksgiving and am starting to have some questions. Does this resort have a swim up bar? It doesn%26#39;t appear so from pics but hubbie wanted to know. Also, I read from a trip report awhile ago about mugs you can buy at the resort and get free soda refills. Do they still offer this?
We are there at the end of November, and I read whale watching doesn%26#39;t start until the beginning of December, what are the odds we would see whales, and would it even be worth it to pay for such an excursion?
Is there anything that is a MUST do? We wanted to go zip lining, but our ten year old is too small. Hubbie still wants to go. Would you go by yourself?
Thanks! I am sure I will have a million more questions :)
Marriott - LihueHi hi! Lucky you... i wish I could go to Kauai in November... anyhoo, the pool doesn%26#39;t have a swim up bar unless they added one since we were there a year ago. However, the wait staff circle the pool taking orders for food and drinks so you can always do that instead of walking to the the bar.
The mugs you%26#39;re referring to are called Mahalo Mugs and they are pretty big, plastic mugs you get at a coffee place or give-a-ways from work. I think it was around $25 for the one I bought and you can fill it with coffee from the coffee stand in the lobby area above the pool (self serve but I never woke up early enough to do this) or soda from the pool bar (self serve... did this all the time).
We went beach hopping the entire time we were there so didn%26#39;t get the chance to do the things you%26#39;re asking about... Snorkeling and swimming is amazing everywhere but you%26#39;ll have to watch the tides and surf with such a youngster with you... pick up the Ultimate Kauai Guide (blue cover) for a listing of everything to do there.
Have a good trip!
Marriott - LihueAloha from Kaua%26#39;i!
The Lihu%26#39;e Marriot is a wonderful hotel -- the fantasy pool there is one of the first ones that we had in the state -- it used to be a Chris Hemmeter property and he had lots of ';over the top'; features all over the hotel -- some still remain now that it is a Marriot and the pool is one of them. It has a kind of weird Roman-bath type vibe going on and has several swim-up jacuzzi areas.
It does not however have a ';swim up'; bar -- the only hotel that I can think of on island that has that is the Princeville Hotel infinity pool.
You can indeed buy the big plastic mugs (they look like the ';big gulp'; mugs you get at 7-Eleven!) -- I%26#39;m not sure what the current price is -- you can get coffee or soda at several places all around the property (including the pool area) during your stay -- the mugs are actually good for a year -- I bought one a few years ago just because I was spending lots of time at Kalapaki Beach and I used it everytime I went to the beach to get free soda!
I have never done zip-lining here but have heard that the one at the Princeville Ranch is excellent. I wouldn%26#39;t have any hesitation in going by myself if you are interested. It is a big thing here just now.

Kel, just saw a post further down on things to do with kids on the island and they are great ideas... check out the original post by LLMA.
Wow, thanks so much for the fast replies!
Anything about whale watching that time of year?
Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!
Sorry! November is out of season for whale watching -- it won%26#39;t start up again until next spring!
Malama Pono,
Janet
Bummer about the whales! I keep reading the start in December. I just found the following info:
';Any visit to Kauai from late November through early May is peak time for whale watching. While you can see whales from shore, it is a much more intimate experience when you take a boat tour -- you%26#39;re much closer and in the whale%26#39;s own habitat. ';
I would totally trust a Hawaiian over a website, so thank you for the info!
Although taken almost 2 years ago this photo album should pretty much show what most of it still looks like. That year there were whales in the area just before we left at the end of Oct.

I sure wouldn%26#39;t mind being there again. Re zip line adventure this was my review with photos. We sure enjoyed doing it.

kel, last visit to Kauai was two years ago, but the memories last forever. I%26#39;m sure wife and I are ? years older, but here are some of my sure bets......
First, we have stayed at the Mariott and just love the grounds. The pool is beautiful but has no swim up bar. We have always been there in November for our anniversary and have yet to see a whale.
Good luck, they do start arriving end of Nov.
Be sure to rent a convertible to really see the island, you won%26#39;t be sorry. Also drive that convertible to Waimaia Canyon. Very nice drive.
Take a sunset dinner cruise with Capt. Andy. The view a the Napalii
coastline is amazing.
If you only do one excursion make it a helicopter flight. This is how you really see the beauty of the island. We used Safari Helicopter.
Enjoy.................aloha

Is the poster asking about whale-watching in Alaska?? :-D
Prime humpback whale-watching months in HAWAII are late November through the beginning of April or so.
Winter time is whale time in Hawaii!
Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!
Duh! You are absolutely right -- I have no clue as to what I was thinking of when I typed that -- maybe too much coffee as I was typing? Sorry for the mis-information on that - my bad!
I do know that usually I don%26#39;t see whales here until after Thanksgiving, but that is just me -- I don%26#39;t go on whale watches and rely on my eyes from Kekaha Beach!
Kala Mai!

Janet
