Day trip plan

After reading a lot of info in this forum, we%26#39;ve decided to take a daytrip to Lanai during our Maui vacation. 9/22 to be specific.

Ferry reservations, 9:15am and 6:45pm. Jeep reserved from ALE.

Plan is to snorkel for a while at Hulopo%26#39;e Bay. Maybe take a short hike to Sweetheart rock. Drive up to Lanai City and get a picnic lunch. Drive out to Polihu%26#39;a beach for lunch and a walk down the beach. Return to Lanai City early afternoon and drive the Munro trail, ending up back at Hulopo%26#39;e for maybe a late afternoon swim/snorkel before catching the ferry back.

This sound workable? Anything else we should try to add? Anything for supper around the dock area or wait until we get back to Lahaina?

I should also say that it will be our anniversary, and want to make sure we see/do something memorable. We%26#39;re outdoorsy kind of people, so this ';exploring'; type of activity appeals to us, instead of doing the fine-dining scene.

Thanks

Day trip plan

I think you can fit this into a day. If you are taking the 9:15 ferry, that will get you to the dock at 10:00. I%26#39;m assuming your jeep will be at the dock parking lot? If so, you can drive down to Hulopo%26#39;e Bay instead of walking. Seems to me, you will probably snorkel from about 10:30 - 12:30 or so. Then, you will get cleaned up and head into town to pick up lunch. I%26#39;m thinking you won%26#39;t get to Polihua until about 2:00.

2:00 - 3:00 Polihua

3:00-3:30 Back to Lana%26#39;i City

3:30 - 5:00 Munro Trail

5:00 - 5:30 Back to Hulopo%26#39;e Bay Area

*I don%26#39;t think there are any choices around the dock area for dinner. There is one small sandwich shop I believe. Not sure of the hours*

You may want to spend the last hour checking out the tidal pools in the bay or relaxing on the beach before the ferry. Might be best to eat dinner in Lahaina. Hopefully, you will get some more feedback on your schedule. I think you will LOVE Lana%26#39;i if you are ';outdoorsy'; people. You should think about spending more time there on your next visit to the islands!

Aloha tgienger,

I think you have a great plan, and Naturecat%26#39;s times seam pretty reasonable. I didn%26#39;t drive the Munro Trail last time, so my memory from 2 years ago is a little weak.. It is 12 miles long and you will probably drive 5-15mph most of the way with some stops. So I think 1 1/2 hours sounds good. And the end of the Munro Trail is at the top of the hill back to Manele Bay, so you are only 10-15 minutes from there at that point. Things to keep in mind: the best place to pick up a picnic lunch is at Pele%26#39;s Other Garden in Lana%26#39;i City. They are open for lunch and dinner, but not inbetween. I can%26#39;t remember when they close after lunch (probably 1:30 or 2:00), so you better give them a call (808-565-9628). So you may need to end your morning beach time a little earlier (you will be starving anyways). You can either call ahead to have the picnic lunch ready when you get there, or order it when you get to the restaurant and check out the town for a few minutes while you wait. You can bring your own snorkel gear/rent it on Maui or I think ALE will supply it for you (double check with them).

I am not sure you will have time for a late PM snorkel/swim, so it might make sense to get a drink and a snack at Manele Bay resort before heading back on the ferry. You can either do this at open air inside bar, Hale Ahe Ahe, or at the poolside bar which has better views of the ocean. There is really nothing at the dock.

I think you have done some excellent research and have a great plan. I don%26#39;t have much else to add. My usual warning though, is that after a day trip to Lana%26#39;i, you will want to stay for a week or longer. : )

Congrats on the anniversary, we just celebrated out 25th on Lana%26#39;i this past January.

Thanks for the feedback. We%26#39;re both really looking forward to this day-trip to Lanai. Expect it to be a high-light of our vacation.

DRV, it%26#39;s our 23rd annv, so we%26#39;re just a couple years behind you!
