The Maui blue book talks about thes flying bugs called ';midges'; in Maalaea. !!! Said they are quite prevelent in late winter and early spring, in the a.m. and p.m.
Has anyone ever seen or heard of these things?
I wanted to go to Buzz%26#39;s Wharf because someone mentioned the Mango Creme Brule%26#39;....YUM! Probably not in the morning.
Has anyone eaten other food there?
Thanks.
Maalaea......bugs called ';midges';?
There is a swampy area between Maalea and N. Kihei that can produce these things. Some years are worse than others. You%26#39;ll be fine right out at the marina with the breeze from the ocean.
We%26#39;ve eaten at Buzz%26#39;s -- OK, nothing spectacular. The Waterfront is right there, too, housed in a non-descript condo; rated near the top of all the restaurants on Maui.
Maalaea......bugs called ';midges';?
Pattie,
When are you going? I am going in APril, I am very curious about the ';bugs';. Could you report back if you go before me?
I am staying in Ma%26#39; alaea Bay in that nondescript condo. (yikes!)
Thanks, Cindy
The midges were a problem several years ago, but have been under control for the past 5 or so years. It used to be you could see clouds of them as drove through the Sugar Beach area. It is not an issue at this time.
that%26#39;s GREAT news!
I wish they would make reference to that in the book Maui Revealed.
Cindy -- I could have phrased that better. I just meant that it seems odd for a first class restaurant to be tucked out of sight in behind a condo parking lot. Hope you plan at least one dinner there.
ChiSue- I will eat at least one meal there!
My daughter, (honeymooned in Maui last year) actually told me she preferred the food at Waterfront over Mama%26#39;s fish house.
I was a little nervous after I made our reservation at Milowai, but not anymore. My DH and I don%26#39;t like busy resort areas. I think this place will suit us just fine. The condo we are renting looks like a million dollar condo with a terrific view. I spoke with the owner (he is a local) and he seems very helpful. (he also works for barefoot tours) .

Aloha Pattie!! As the op said the bugs haven%26#39;t been a problem for sometime. The Waterfront is a wonderful restaurant. Buzz%26#39;s Warf is also a great restaurant. They are known for their giant tahitian prawns. I%26#39;m the one who is hooked on the mango creme brulee. I have been to Buzz%26#39;s quite often. You will like it. I don%26#39;t eat seafood, but their prime rib and serloin to die for.
I stayed at Milowai in December and didn%26#39;t see any of the bugs or any of the strong trade winds that Maui Revealed mentioned..so Maalaea is definitely the best/cheapest location for an oceanfront condo!!
Thanks everyone. Yes, I wish the Maui Revealed would make an ';update'; on the buggy issue.
Msfuzz, It was you! Sorry I was having trouble remembering.
That Mago Creme Brule%26#39; souns wonderful. I am hoping to get there to eat.
I think that the midges were breeding out of the pond south of Maalaea. We went to the Ocean Center there and didn%26#39;t notice anything - and my wife is a bug magnet. No bugs spotted on Maui besides the aformentioned praying mantis and some small harmless flies.
