Aloha,
We are staying in Lahaina, where is the cheapest grocery store? Doesnt have to be in Lahaina, or does it really matter?
grocery questionThe cheapest place to get groceries is Costco which is near the airport. We found Safeway to be the cheapest place near Lahaina. Make sure you get a Safeway card. Still you should prepare yourself for sticker shock :) Michelle
grocery questionYou must balance price with availability - depending on when the boat arrived and when they can stock the shelves - some items may not be available. If consistently not available, they become rare commodities and the price can go up.
In general prepare for anywhere from 5 - 25% more than mainland grocery store prices.
There is Star Market at 3350 Lower Honoapiilani Rd in Lahaina and we like them better in general for price, service and variety.
There is also a Safeway and a Long%26#39;s in the Cannery Mall at 1221 Honoapiilani Hwy and a small Foodland at 878 Front St in Lahaina
Whalers and ABC and smaller general stores have limited options and usually somewhat higher prices.
You may consider joining the free members only clubs for one or more chains; depending on the items and specials for that week, you can save some $$$. Also, every Tuesday you can find grocery store flyers with coupons in the MAUI NEWS.
You may want to bargain shop for fresher produce and fruits at
Farmer%26#39;s Market, held on Mon, Wed, Fri 7-11 am on Lower Honoapiilani Highway in the Hawaiian Moons Store parking lot.
Many choose to shop at Costco on arrival; to get bargins on bulk items like bottled water, wine, beer; frozen meats, etc. Be careful to only buy what you can actually use; very easy to over-buy.
And one option -- for those who want to save $$ but do NOT want to hassle with Maui grocery shopping or a lot of meal prep and clean up. Check out this wonderful take out service in Kahului, very near airport. You can pre-order online before you arrive; pick up items in store, very good food quality, almost gourmet, variety, even vegetarian choices. Food is prepared fresh, then frozen in green packaging; take back to your condo and heat/serve. Voila!!! Even locals love this option because food is so consistenly good; nice portion size, convenience and average $7 per person for a meal. Can%26#39;t beat that on the mainland. Check out Delicious - your food delivered; used to be called Dish Simple; several good reviews on this site; online menu at https://www.yourfooddelivered.com/
We have no shortages here, and there will be no price fixing based on shortages. Shelves are stocked every night, barges come in twice a week. Unless we have a barge strike expect to find what you want at the advertised price, and then your biggest worries would be non-perishables, like TP and laundry soap. No strikes are pending, don%26#39;t worry.
Safeway has consistently overall lower prices, as they have the largest buying power. They usually have the best specials too. If you shop Safeway at home you%26#39;ll find all the familiar Safeway brands.
Foodland / Sack %26amp; Save run a close second pricewise, but they carry a much smaller selection. Star Market is the priciest, with less selection in most departments and fewer good specials. They have a nice cheese selection but their meat and fish just never seems fresh to me and some of the stuff has been on their freezer case way too long.
You can most likely find everything you need at the best prices by shopping at the Safeway and the Long%26#39;s Drugs at the Cannery Mall in Lahaina. You are on vacation, no need to worry about shopping around to save a few more dollars.
thanks for all the info!!! Safeway sounds like the way to go for us, convenient and good price...since its only two of us, I didnt want to go with the Costco route.
atm4966, I know I was having the same dilemma about Costco, since it will be just the two of us. Not sure if I can pass up those great Maui Onion potato chips they have, though, anyone know where else you can get them reasonably priced? And how do liquor prices at Costco compare to Long%26#39;s? We would be buying wine, beer, rum, POG or Mai tai mix. I know our Long%26#39;s here in CA generally has pretty good prices on all of those. Also what about milk, heard it%26#39;s pretty exepensive but not so bad at Costco?
Star Markets are great. Lots of variety, both the stuff you are used to plus the exotic stuff you are looking for.
