Grand Hyatt Luau?

Can anyone tell me about the luau at the Grand Hyatt in Kauai?

Grand Hyatt Luau?

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

I%26#39;m not going to be much help as far as the food goes as I%26#39;ve never ';officially'; attended this lu%26#39;au -- but I%26#39;ve watched the show several times and am familiar with the dancers so I%26#39;ll try to answer from that aspect of it.

It is held outside (except in bad weather, when it is moved indoors to the grand ballroom) on a grassy area close to the ocean -- long tables are set up by a big stage with fancy lighting and a long buffet table area is also set up. You can have your picture taken with one of the dancers and leis are given out also. it is done by ';Tihati Productions'; which is a big production company from O%26#39;ahu that does most of the Waikiki shows as well as a few others here on Kaua%26#39;i.

It is a big, glitzy show that features dances of Hawai%26#39;i as well as New Zealand and Tahiti -- the dancers are from here on Kaua%26#39;i from various hula halau (hula schools) and are well trained. The downside for me is that it is very much a ';Las Vegas'; style show -- Tihati is known for glitzy, big productions -- the girls are all ';showgirl'; type dancers and Tihati has them use wigs if their hair is short and long fake eyelashes. I say this not because the dancers aren%26#39;t good -- they are -- but because it is more of a typical lu%26#39;au, Waikiki style.

It just depends on what you are looking for -- these shows are always well attended and are very popular -- they are certainly good entertainment. I believe the Hyatt%26#39;s food is also considered very good for this type of lu%26#39;au -- it has a mix of traditional (poi, lomi salmon) as well as more ';visitor friendly'; things (teriyaki chicken, fish, pasta salad, etc.) -- I%26#39;m not sure about the alcohol situation - if it is part of the price or extra.

If you are staying on the South Side and want to attend a lu%26#39;au in this area I%26#39;d say that this is probably the fancier of the 2 in the Po%26#39;ipu Beach area (the other one is at the Sheraton) -- and certainly the larger of the two.

My personal favorite on the island is Smith%26#39;s Lu%26#39;au -- I think if you look on these boards you%26#39;ll find lots of information on that one. It is located on the East Side by the Wailua River. A real ';old-time'; production (it has been done for over 40 years by the Smith family)

that is just a lot less ';glitzy'; than the Tihati productions.

Hope someone else can pipe in that has attended the Hyatt and can comment on the food!

Grand Hyatt Luau?

We often attend the Hyatt%26#39;s Luau because it is within strolling distance (staggering on the way back) of the Makahuena condo where we stay. The drinks %26amp; food are great (but the desserts are a relatively limited) and the setting is fabulous. Some classify fire dancers as hokey, but we enjoy them and they make for neat photos (if you%26#39;re not an expert, recommend practicing on a torch beforehand to get exposure etc settings right). Unless recently changed/improved, they don%26#39;t offer ';preferred seating'; which means you need to line up early for a good table.

We ';saw'; the Hyatt%26#39;s luau from our balcony last Thursday, as we have done in the past. We enjoy the entertainment, which you can hear all over the resort from the outside. Since it lasts a couple hours, we began by going to Stevenson%26#39;s Library and having a drink and watching the sunset from the upper patio bar. We ordered room service, and went back to our room where we didn%26#39;t have to wait long, and our meal arrived. They set the table on our patio and bring a white linen tablecloth, and it is very comfortable.

The week before, friends of ours from home attended. They were staying at the Poipu Marriott, and drove over, as they didn%26#39;t want to go as far as Smith%26#39;s and drive the distance in the dark on the return, but it was their first time on Kauai. They said the food was really quite good at the Hyatt%26#39;s luau, as it is in all their restaurants. I got some great shots of the ocean and sunset in the background. If you go, you will too.

Enjoy!

Wife and i went in Aug.07..Plenty of food.Pulled pork, steak, chicken.Mai tais galore..Teenager @ our table had 5 steaks..You can eat all you wont.Show was nice, touristy but nice.We enjoyed it,but then again we liked EVERYTHING about the Hyatt..We would never stay anywhere else..Total classy resort.....

Mahalo

Wife and I went t\o the Luau in Feb and loved it. The food was very good, mai tia%26#39;s were good and re-filled often lol. Wife says deserts were just ok. Show was good and probably typical of most luau%26#39;s. Was held in the courtyard that day which was ok but I think they normally do it out by the beach.

I would go back.
