Trip Report #1 or Haole on Parade ;)

First 2 days of 9/1-9/7 trip

Saturday-

Arrived at 11am from LAX. Didn’t check bags as we packed light and only had 2 roller carry-ons and 2 backpacks. Headed straight to baggage claim for brochures and then off to Hertz. Played stupid and went straight to the Gold desk and bypassed the 8 people in the regular Hertz line. After explaining that I booked with Priceline but am a Gold member, she smiled and handed me my paperwork in less than 5 minutes. Aloha spirit alive and well! (Hertz actually owed me this one, I have had a few bad CSR moments with them and would not have normally skipped the line). Hit Costco next, followed by WalMart, both super easy to find. Managed to find the only pair of boardshorts w/o a price tag and wouldn’t you know….All locals behind me in line! In each of the stores I noticed one thing….I was the only one mainland doubletiming it! I normally walk fast, talk fast, and could put a New Yorker to shame but this was ridiculous! It was like everyone was standing still! I had a real adjustment ahead of me with that one. Hit the Highway and cruised (35mph) to Lahaina, stopped at Snorkel Bobs for a week rental of snorkel gear and then checked into our hotel. Funny seeing the cart with our 4 small bags and 8 bags of walmart crap. Hyatt gave us a 4th floor partial ocean view (great considering the $219/nt paid on priceline) and the room was nice. Relaxed a bit on the lanai and chilled on the very comfy bed. We headed to Leilanis where we boarded the Kapalua Kai for a cocktail cruise. Highly recommended! Pupu’s were tasty and the crew kept the drinks coming. Very good mai-tais, and a good selection of other bevs. Met another couple from L.A. and sat with them and chatted throughout the whole cruise. Sailed back in under wind power for a nice sunset. We decided to keep the party going so our new friends joined us for drinks at Moose McGillicuddys. 9pm was the start of the Red Bull and Vodka happy hour, can’t remember the price but they made us wait 4 min before they would give us the discounted price. I must say, you have to watch out for the moose….I had 8 of those RB and Vodkas and still walked out of the place. Watered down to say the LEAST! I’m normally a lightweight and would have been hammered on 4. Still had fun and the day seemed jam packed (which it was) This would take it’s toll on us the next morning.

Sunday- Woke up late! 11:30am. So much for adjusting to Island Time. No hangover which just proves my point about the watered down MM drinks. Munched on bagel bars from Costco as we headed out to Wailea. Walked around the shops but nothing caught our fancy (we have fashion island and south coast plaza, so wasn’t impressed) and then headed over to Makena for some beach time and drum circle. Didn’t need directions for little beach, it’s very obvious and considering the Labor Day weekend there was a steady stream of people heading over (very easy climb, short with stable footholds, no worse than stairs with a few stairs missing in places?). I’ve only been to moderately populated CO beaches before so I was thinking this was going to be interesting. Interesting indeed. We immediately noticed that it was about 30% clothed on the beach. I couldn’t understand why someone would go to a beach of this sort and not indulge in the ritual? And they weren’t even embarrassed by it. Most CO beaches you feel uncomfortable CLOTHED. Couldn’t quite comprehend this. I chalked it up to the drum circle and the long weekend. The drum circle was cool, I was nude and my SO was topless and enjoyed it. As the afternoon wore on it got to be more clothed than nude and so we packed it in and headed back to the Hyatt. Little Beach is a decent stop, but for a nudist, it might just be a little too crazy. If you go, GET NAKED for chrissakes! Finished up the day by heading to Kapalua and had sushi at Sensai. Very good mango roll and the fresh water eel roll was as good as any I’ve had. Shared a seafood pasta dish with scallops and prawns….the scallops were good, Prawns were more like shrimp that had been to the gym, not quite the size of a “Prawn” in my book, and they were overcooked (hard-rubbery) overall a bittersweet meal.

More to come as time permits.

Trip Report #1 or Haole on Parade ;)

Sounds like a fun start to Maui. I wondered about those cocktail cruises. Do you have to book Kapalua Kai ahead of time, if so how soon?

I think I will pass on Little Beach!

See what a nice guy you are- you made friends on the frst night there! You really can%26#39;t make fun of the clothed people on Little Beach when your SO was only topless! Looking forward to hear what you thought of the Hyatt. Partial ocean view for $219 is a great deal.

Thanks for the first installment.

My husband hears you on the pace. He lived in Pearl City and Mililani on Oahu for 2 1/2 years and it drove him a little nuts. It%26#39;s fine while you%26#39;re on vacation. Every day of the year, not so much.

Now you know why little beach is a clothing optional beach, not just a nudy beach!!

As far as Maui Time goes, after 6yrs on two islands you get used to it. Going back to the mainland hustle and bustle, now that is something that REALLY takes time to get used to.

Same as if you went to NYC and you%26#39;re from a slower paced town. It%26#39;s different. That is one of the the glories of a vacation - a change of pace - literally. LOL.

What was worse was riding in the car after we were picked up on our return to mainland. After driving 35mph ALL WEEK, 70mph felt like a NASCAR time trial!

Enjoyed the post...

Regarding Moose%26#39;s... did you at least get a little buzzed? If not, it could have been water that you got watered down with!! ;-b

Maui time. This is why it would be hard to live on an island. Everything just sort of sloooowwws way down. It certainly teaches a little patience doesn%26#39;t it. When we get home from Maui, it%26#39;s usually a little after 11pm, so no traffic, just have to watch out for the drunks on I-5.

Sounds like a fun trip so far - I don%26#39;t know how I missed your report yesterday.

I suppose Little Beach is all about a nice ';little beach'; and the term ';optional'; means what it says.

Must be about what makes you feel good and not that you have to be naked. Or clothed.....or whatever. Isn%26#39;t that a novel thought everyone? A person just being happy as such. Hmmm?

Enjoyed your report...sorry about the watered down drinks. How about making some killers of your own next time huh?
