Hi thanks for your help....
Found a house rental on the beach one mile from the end of the Farrington Hwy. Apparently this is a quiet area. Peaceful and Beautiful?? Can anyone tell me if this is the kind area to stay in. Having never been to that part of the island, I was wondering if anyone can tell me more regarding this topic.
We are planning a September wedding...is it better than the windward?, cause we found a house in Hauula as well.
Thanks soooo much
Teresa
Farrington Hwy......
I%26#39;m guessing you%26#39;re talking about the ';end'; of Farrington Highway past Dillingham airstrip (Farrington is no longer a contiguous road so there are 4 ';ends.';).
If so, yeah, it%26#39;s nice - fairly quiet, lotsa beach, kinda isolated (but that%26#39;s all relative on Oahu). I%26#39;d probably pick that area over Hau%26#39;ula but I%26#39;m not really sure why (maybe because I already live on the Windward side so Hau%26#39;ula is no big deal).
Only real problem with either place for a wedding is having any mainland guests find the place on time and then drive home (or to wherever they%26#39;re staying) at night after a cocktail or three.
Farrington Hwy......
I would not stay at either end of Farrington Highway. Lots of crime at beaches on the Leeward (west) side. Lots of crime on the beaches near Dillingham airfield. Every beach in both areas has broken glass in the parking lots from break-ins.
Windward side is better.
Aloha,
Congratulations on your wedding plans.
There is very little one mile from the end of Farrington Hwy. The YMCA has Camp Erdman and that is a nice facility. I have gotten good reports about Owen%26#39;s Retreat which is next to Mokuleia Beach Park. While there are some locals/homelss at the beach park, I have not heard that they bother the neighbors.
While I must admit that on the Windward side, you might feel safer, there are very few places on Oahu I would consider real safe. The problem with the windward side is that you may as well save you airfare and go to Southern CA. Just about any spot on Oahu has a danger of getting your stuff ripped off from your vehicle.
I have to agree with dusty on this one. I think I would have to opt for the windward side. There are quite a few homeless camps set up on Farrington and it just isn%26#39;t as safe as it was seen a year ago.
As far as the crime goes, there is no more crime on the No. shore or windward side as there is anyplace on the island. The crime we have on our islands is nothing compared to what they have on the mainland. I really don%26#39;t think its fair to send out that message to people coming to visit.
I agree you always should be cautious in new places.. for example New York City. But it gives the islands an impression that really isn%26#39;t warranted.
Aloha!
My guy and I flew over from Calif last spring and spent 5 weeks camping on the beaches at North Shore. We have a friend who lives in Haleiwa and he helped us with camp spots. We stayed a few days at the YMCA campground across from Dillingham. It was one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been lucky enough to spend time on. There is a swimming pool next to the office, but we didn%26#39;t even get close to it. Most of the time there was no one on the beach. In the early evenings there would be a couple of guys with their nets fishing. Very nice and took the time to answer my questions. The campground was clean, had hot showers. We camped in other placed too, and everyone we met was excellent. Did a lot of grocery shopping at the Haleiwa Market and within a week or two the clerks and locals would take the time to talk with us about our vacation. Going back next year. Once you get to spend 5 weeks there it%26#39;s like you%26#39;ve been there forever. If you do this, please remember to leave it as pristine as you found it. Aloha, Karen
