i was snorkeling at richardson%26#39;s last year and it was the best snorkeling expierience i have ever have (i saw sea turtles!!). i would love to stay in hilo and wanted to know of hotels that arent more than a 30 minute walk to richardsons. thanks!

At the Beach with Friends B%26amp;B, Maureen%26#39;s B%26amp;B, Oceanside B%26amp;B are all less then30 minute walk. At the Beach with Friends B%26amp;B is only a block away from ';big bay'; (as opposed to ';little bay'; which is across the street). There are no hotels down here but there are also vacation rentals.

Fevertrees,

The only hotel in that area I can recommend is the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, and even that is with warnings regarding the age and condition of the hotel. I would not recommend walking to Richardson鈥檚, PERIOD. I would advise renting a car, staying someplace that you think you will enjoy, and drive to Richardson鈥檚

For similar experience snorkeling, check out Kahalu鈥檜 in Kona (early AM only) and the Kapoho tide pools.

Good luck and happy travels!

At The Beach With Friends is right there. Absolutely wonderful B %26amp; B! I guess I am either stupid or just brave as I ran along the road not quite to Richardson%26#39;s Beach and had no problems whatsoever. Lots of other people out too!

if you knew how much beer the drivers on the way back from the beach had imbibed, you might have had some fear. Ignorance is bliss.

%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;Lots of other people out too!

As one lemming said to another on the way over the cliff.

just kidding, but sometimes the fact that a lot of other people are doing it isn%26#39;t the best rationale.

This is not California, running the roads for exercise is not a big hobby here, and as far as the drivers go, they are probably discussing how many ';points'; they gave up by not mowing you down when you gave them the chance.

Pedestrians should be on the defensive in Hawai`i. Oahu is the worst. Pedestrians are constantly getting killed over there. Well, not ';constant'; as in one per minute, but it%26#39;s on the news time after time what a problem it is.

There are a few Hilo residents who walk everywhere, but they are touched in the head. (not joking, they are familiar sights)

Oh believe me, I saw the beer being consumed AT the beach thus the reason I took my chances (very carefully) jogging rather than exploring the tide pools. Sort of a shame that more policing isn%26#39;t done! Downtown Hilo reminded me of downtown Santa Cruz where they too have many %26#39;touched in the head%26#39; wonderful folks.

good, good, glad you were careful.

I%26#39;m smiling at the comparison. It%26#39;s been awhile since I%26#39;ve been in Santa Cruz, so my image isn%26#39;t too current. I spent many years traversing Telegraph Ave in Berkeley on the way to class. I%26#39;ve seen it all ....

Hilo isn%26#39;t in that league.

Did you go to Pahoa? Talk about Santa Cruz.

(once upon a time I was accepted to UC Santa Cruz, but it didn%26#39;t work out as my time to go to school. I%26#39;m glad I went to Berkeley instead. ;-) )

Was that back in the day at UCSC when clothing was optional? That was an interesting time. Downtown Santa Cruz was almost completely rebuilt after the 89 earthquake. It is still a very culturally rich area. We only got to drive through Pahoa so only saw a glimpse. Would have loved to have spent a little time! Maybe next time.

Well mickip13, if you can%26#39;t wait to get back to Pahoa, you can always come up to Berkeley for a quick dose. Overheard on Telegraph Ave yesterday.. ';It%26#39;s too dangerous, the space aliens have landed and they%26#39;re taking names.';
