Am concidering taking my 80yr.old Dad to Maui this summer. He walks w/a cane or a walker,-hip problems. Hoping that the sun, air, water %26amp; beauty will do him good. Any info on handicap friendly condos etc., in Ka%26#39;anapli on Napili would be welcome.
Maui w/ 80 yr. old?!
How great to take your dad! I think one of the condos in Kaanapali would be a great choice, a ground floor unit. He could walk along on the beachwalk and be able to see a lot. I don%26#39;t know what your budget is, but there is the Whaler and the Kaanapali Alii that is beachfront.
Maui w/ 80 yr. old?!
Kaanapali is great with the paved beach path and people watching opportunities. Oceanfront at the Whaler would be great. I would choose something with a nice oceanfront view since he likely would not want to roam much. I would rent by owner so that you know exactly what you are getting. I don%26#39;t know how many of the units have a shower instead of a tub. The Whaler is right next door to Whaler%26#39;s Village for entertainment and dining choices. You can catch a bus into Lahaina for a change of pace (or take a taxi).
My only concern is that my husband had to rescue an older man at Kaanapali who was just wading when he was knocked down and couldn%26#39;t get back up. Things can turn suddenly. It was pretty scary. I doubt he gave the surf another chance! I would stay somewhere with an oceanfront pool so that he can comfortably enjoy the water. The Whaler pool is oceanfront.
Yes, we also had to help an older gentleman to get out of the swimming pool at our condo. He simply couldn%26#39;t get his balance and had almost no bouyancy. It took my husband, me, his wife and another gentleman to get him out of the pool and sitting in a chair. He may have weighed just over 200 pounds but it was surprising how difficult it was to lift him. If you spend a lot of time with him at home, check things like his equilibrium and see if he is capable of getting himself into and out of a pool. I too would recommend the Whaler because of its proximatey to restaurants and shops but a ground floor unit in Napili would be a nice alternative. It would be easier to get to know your visiting neighbors at a smaller complex in case you do need help at some time. Also most of the Napili condos have no smimming pools and a steeper entry into the ocean.
Thank you so much- I was feeling that the Whaler may be our best bet, or Napili Bay as the ocean is calmer there.
Napili Bay is nice, but no paved walking areas. The beach in front of Kaanapali is also very nice and the waves are very small. In addition, there are many paved places for him to walk around right on the beach connecting the hotels (which are fun to walk through too) as well as the shopping areas. You%26#39;re a great kid!
I took my nearly 85 year old mother this year, and also a couple years ago. Even with her limited walking stamina she loved it. We took a resin full size chair from our condo lanai to the beach so she could sit and watch the activity. Just go slow! It%26#39;s worth every minute.
