We are coming to BI in mid March and staying at the Hapuna for 5 days. What sights would be on your list for ';must do and see';? I already have a snorkeling trip with Dolphin Discoveries planned as well as one day at VNP. I would be interested in reserving a day to explore someplace in Kohala that is perhaps a bit off the beaten path.
Not to be Missed Sights in Kohala Region
since the entire north is all private land..there is no off the beaten path..unless you trespass... and folks up there are not real warm to that... there is the hiway and thats it....thats reality
The area around Hawi and the hike into Pololu valley are the exception.
Suggest you contact Hawaii forest and trails they do a tour up there...4 mile hike. about $100 pp

Dan is right. The only way you will get off the beaten path is to look into hikes with Hawai%26#39;i Forest and Trail. The towns of Hawi and Kapa%26#39;au are fun to explore and the Pololu Valley hike is great. Grab one of the hiking sticks in the bin at the top of the trail, the path can get muddy/slippery due to the frequent showers there.
The above take the most extreme interpretation of ';off the beaten path.'; The Pololu hike is certainly worth doing--there WILL be a lot of cars (like 20) up top but not all go down, so though you may pass or be passed on the trail, it is pretty private on the beach.
Lapakahi is a nice place to see on the way to Pololu. Not a lot of people in a remote area.
The walk to Mookini Heiau and the Kamehameha I Birthplace from Upolu Airport is a nice clifftop walk, hot and windy but great views of Maui and the channel. Can;t promise you won%26#39;t see anyone else but it is remote and a large area. We never see other walkers, sometimes are passed by a truck or 2.
You can find out about these places by googling or searching the TA forum for threads on same. They combine into a nice day trip (Hapuna, Lapakahi, Mookini, maybe lunch in Hawi, Pololu, back with a shave ice stop at Kawaihae).
Ditto for Kiholo Lagoon at mm 81 (in Kona).
