We are going to Kauai in mid Oct. and have heard that some places have a free luau, does anyone know of this? We are not looking for for the shows with food.
Free luau's
Do you mean a free hula show? There are three I know of off the top of my head. I%26#39;m sure there are more.
Coconut Market on the east side every Wednesday, 5:00 pm, Center Stage
Poipu Shopping Village: Free Polynesian Revue Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5pm.
Hyatt Hotel: Performances may include a Hawaiian Soloist, Hawaiian Duet Or a Keiki (Children%26#39;s) Hula, depending upon the evening. Also, the Hyatt has a nice Torch Lighting Ceremony and other live entertainment.
Free luau's
Last Thursday we happened to be at the Poipu Shopping Village at 5 PM, returning to the Hyatt, after a day at the norh shore. We were looking at some things in the shops, and saw part of the free hula show. If you are staying in the north, I wouldn%26#39;t drive all the way down for this one. Pick a show closer to your condo.
The entertainment at the Hyatt is first rate, just for the price of a drink, and the view can%26#39;t be beat!
While waiting for seating at the upstairs pizza place we wandered downstairs to a HULA School? and watched was this the coconut mall? south of airport about 15 min- south of kmart
Coconut Market place is on the east side of the island so no, that would not be it. Maybe the shopping center near the Marriott Hotel at Nawiliwili Harbor? Poipu shoping Village does not have an ';upstairs';.
This is my first time to HI so I do get some things wrong, I guess it is the free hula%26#39;s. We are staying near Kaapa, is the the Hyatt far from their?
The Hyatt is on the south shore, Kapaa is on the east side. But it does not take long to get anywhere, really. The Hyatt is about 30-40 minutes from Kapaa depending on traffic. The Coconut Market Place is in Kapaa and they have a free hula show. But I prefer going to the Hyatt for pupus and a glass of wine.
Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!
There are several ';free hula shows'; on the island -- one of them is down in the Anchor Cove area in Nawiliwili - it is done primarily for the cruise ship crowd (altho%26#39; anyone can attend) and is by Aunty Bev%26#39;s ';Healani%26#39;s Hula Halau'; -- if you can get to this one it is great as I think she usually uses her small keikis for the show and they do a wonderful job! I%26#39;m not sure of the day on this one. It is held directly under the new ';El Mariachi'; Mexican restaurant.
There is also one every Wednesday at the Coconut Marketplace -- it is done by Aunty Keala and also features keiki -- she is the sister of one of our well-known kumu hula, Aunty Kapu Kinimaka-Alquiza who competes almost every year at Merrie Monarch. This is also a well done show with great dancers.
The one here on the South Side at the Po%26#39;ipu Shopping Village is primarily Tahitian dance -- and they use older girls for this show as well as some keiki.
The Grand Hyatt has a free hour-long keiki hula show every Tuesday and Saturday night at 7pm following the torchlighting ceremony -- it is at Seaview Terrace and is by Kumu Hula Leilani Rivera Bond, another well known recording artist and Kumu Hula who is the Hyatt%26#39;s resident entertainer. The shows are free and you do not have to buy drinks to watch -- but of course they like it when you do!
There are numerous hula halau (school) on island and most of them try to perform at community events and shopping centers for exposure for their dancers. It is always a great thing to watch because unlike the commercial lu%26#39;aus, they are actually traditional hula halau and this gives you a chance to watch them perform the dances that they are learning - a much more ';authentic'; show than most lu%26#39;au shows.
The Coconut Marketplace also has free entertainment and Hawaiian crafts all day every first Friday and Saturday of the month.
You can make leis and weave lauhala and coconut leaves. They have different crafters every month and this is a new event that the Coconut Marketplace is starting as part of their attempt to re-do the shopping area and have more cultural activities and involve local craftspeople and dancers/musicians.

This is good to know. My friend begins her cruise next week from Honolulu and is on a budget. She is taking her aging mother as a special gift for her, and needs some free things on the islands that don%26#39;t involve much walking.
I also told her about the Hyatt%26#39;s entertainment, as they will be overnight in the harbor, and if they rent a car as planned, it will be doable. Yes, I know the show is free, but when you sit in their chairs in the lounge, they come around several times asking you if you want to order or have a refill. We have one drink during the show, as we go to dinner following .
