kohala coast

I was curious as to how much of the Kohala coast from, say Waikoloa, up through the Mauna Lani properties is assessable by trail? Is it possible to go the whole distance or does the lack of beach make it impossible. I know there are many private homes in the areas between the resort properties that may make this impossible.

kohala coast

the kings trail runs from Kona to Mauni-lani...it is about 1 to 2 miles inland with no water, facitities and costal access...I figure a 3 day walk

Again nowhere near the beach....miles from it

kohala coast

The Kings Trail rund through Kohala, too. But I believe that what you are looking for might be the Ala Kahakai trail--the historic shoreline trail. It is, obviously, near the shore!

See http://www.hawaiitrails.org/trail.asp?TrailID=HA+14+001

One access point is at Spencer Beach, near the large heiau. Another that gives a lovely walk is from the extreme south end of Puako Road past Paniau (you will see a trail sign) to the Holoholokai Beacj PArk (where the Peuako Petrogloyphs are). You can keep going along the shoreline trail to the Orchid, walk along the Orchid sidewalk, go past Pauoa on the shoreline, then to Mauna Lani along the baech to the fishponds. Then back.

Or you could park in the Holoholokai lot (entered from the Mauna Lani Resort entrance on the highway) and go to Mauna Lani or Puako. Or go partway some other way.

Lovely shoreline, whales in season. If you continue a little way on the shoreline trail around the point you are up on cliffs and have a nice view. But I don%26#39;t suggest trying to get to Waikoloa that way.

The way to/from Waikoloa is messed up by construction. You can get beach access at 49 Black Sand and the trail supposedly runs south from there. The northern trail from 49 to Mauna Lani proper was realigned byu the construction and is hard ot find and not in my opinion safe. I used to walk the old one from Mauna Lani to where 49 was buiklt and the new one was too shifting/sliding., so I stopped some years ago. I say don%26#39;t do it. Go see 49 if you like but the walk from Mauna Lani fishponds to Puako is much better.

%26gt;%26gt;the walk from Mauna Lani fishponds to Puako is better ...

agreed, very good walk and should be enough to satisfy a person, then you can walk from Hapuna Beach to the Mauna Kea and I think you can get all the way to Spencer.

You cannot walk the coast in North Kohala, because it becomes pali (cliffs), anyway the places worth going are accessible by roads from the highway.

From Anaeho`omalu Bay you can walk south for a ways, but I%26#39;m not sure how far.

Thanks everyone for the info. I am interested in perhaps staying in the Kolea or Hali%26#39;i Kai properties and was wondering what my shoreline walk opportunities were from either location. I%26#39;d love to be able to get up to the Mauna Lani property without driving or walking along the roads. I%26#39;ve never stayed in Kohala before, usually stay in coffee country or Hilo. Looking for sun and warmth and a comfort this time though. The pnw has been so cold and wet this winter (yeah, so what else is new?). Does anyone know if there is still construction next to any of these two properties? Thanks again.

There definitely is construction in the area between 49 Black Sand and Waikoloa Resort. I%26#39;m not sure just which developments are being built, but there are some. They should not be right on the shoreline, though.

You MIGHT be able to walk from Kolea to 49 Black Sand if the trail is complete in that segment. But then I think you need to turn back. Unless you hear first-hand that someone has done it recently, I do not think it is passable from 49 Black Sand to the area where there is a clear trail again, over by Mauna Lani Point Condos and the 15th hole.

Issue is you are on cliffs, goiing along the edge or up and down to the water and while the old trail was quite solid, the newer one is not settled and the rocks slide. It%26#39;s all a%26#39;a lava there--trail is a%26#39;a. So at 49 you would be looking across the bay at the 15th Hole. If you wnted to drive there, just tell the guard beach access. Lot is usually not full and if it is, he will shoo any contractors parked there out of the lot (they like to park trucks there and are not supposed to). Some people think the guards are a hassle but I have never had any problem. (I work in a building with guards so maybe if you are not used to that it%26#39;s more irritating or something.)

Once you get to Mauna Lani proper BY CAR from Waikoloa--park in the beach access lot by the spa--you have nice trail all the way to Puako. And maybe beyond. Trail is coral rubble, sand, etc. Not a%26#39;a!!!!

Here is the Mauna Lani report map

Waikoloa is around the point on the right of the map. What I am saying is DO NOT try to walk from 49 Black Sand to Mauna Lani Point condos--bad or no trail. Beach access parking is more or less near Palm Villas. From there you can go around to the Point condos (clifftop trail, nice views), see the fishponds, start the walk to Puako or Orchid.

They have a brown paper map that is great, maybe you can get one from them when you are there.
