Is there a traditional type of lei for one%26#39; birthday? My DH and I will both be celebrating our b-days next week. BTW, I know this has been recently asked, but tell me again, a good place to buy them near the Hyatt.
Mahalo!
traditional lei for birthday
As soon as you drive up to the Hyatt, and the Valet opens the car door for you, he greets you both with a purple orchard lei. My husband took his off as soon as we were in the room, and there it stayed the rest of the visit. There are not a lot of guys wearing them around.
However, when we went to Sueoka%26#39;s Store, in Old Kolola Town, we saw many reasonable lei%26#39;s and flower arrangements in the refrigerator section. We bought an arrangement to keep in our room which was only $17, but it looked three times that much.
We celebrated my husband%26#39;s Birthday at Tidepools last week. I told them in advance, and they presented him with the Chocolate lava cake dessert with ice cream.
Have a great trip.

Thanks for the suggestions, CAnative. That is funny. You reminded me that each time my DH got a flower lei greeting, he did the very same things as your DH did...took it off and never looked at it again. LOL.
When we stayed at the Hyatt a few years back, upon arrival, the valet gave me an orchid lei, but he gave my husband a kukui nut lei. He still has it matter of fact.
At our recent wedding in Kauai, we both started our ceremony wearing kukui nut leis and then switched to orchid leis during the lei exchange portion of the ceremony.
So, maybe you can wear a floral lei and he can go with a kukui nut one? Food for thought.

Koloa town location...you can contact them online as above.
Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!
I love this question! If there is anything I love it is leis and especially the more unique leis that you can get here.
There isn%26#39;t anything that would be considered ';traditional'; for a birthday celebration -- certain things are more appropriate for a man than a woman however.
Popular men%26#39;s leis are things like kukui nut, cigar leis, ti leaf lei, -- and always maile is appropriate.
This time of year you still have a pretty good selection of flowers for women%26#39;s lei as well -- plumeria, tuberose, puakenikeni, and of course maile!
The suggestion about Sueoka%26#39;s being a good place to find unique lei is absolutely right -- they have a great selection and oftentimes carry the more unique types of lei. It is right in Old Koloa Town. Their prices are very reasonable.
Blue Orchid is downstairs from the salon that I work at in Old Koloa Town (across from the Post Office) -- it is a great florist -- not inexpensive by any means - but they have a wonderful selection as well and can do almost any type of lei if there is something particular you want.
Plumerias are still in season, altho%26#39; they are getting a little more scarce here on the South Shore I%26#39;m afraid -- but you can still get plumeria lei that smell heavenly!
Malama Pono,
Janet
