Using a credit card at Safeway

thanks to the suggestions on this site, I have printed out a safeway application to use (we don%26#39;t have Safeways in our area of the country). Now I wonder, can you use a credit card to purchase groceries when you are just handing in your application for a card that day? ';Thanks for any info...

sapphire15: Sure! You%26#39;ll be given a card to be able to get your ';savings';, then you can swipe either your credit card or debit card. You can even set up your ';Club Card'; to link to your bank account (as a debit card), which is explained on the application.

Also, in case you haven%26#39;t used this before, you don%26#39;t need to have your Club Card physically in your hand to swipe in order to get savings. You can just enter the phone number you used on your application into the keypad.

You%26#39;ll find a lot of times the cashiers have a card they%26#39;ll scan for the savings. I%26#39;ve either forgotten mine before or been with someone without a card and they%26#39;ll occasionally have one near their till ready to go. Granted this didn%26#39;t happen in Maui but they MIGHT be so kind. . .if its busy and all.

We just got back from Maui, and I filled out the application right at the service desk. Took about 30 seconds and they gave me a card on the spot. They didn%26#39;t even ask for much info either. very quick.

We have used Visa card at Safeway on Kauai, Oahu and Big Isle, so assume it will work on Maui. And we use it here in Oregon, many Safeway stores here.They also take Discover.

Yes - most grocery store %26#39;membership%26#39; programs allow you to fill out application right in line and you get discounts applied to your purchase that day. We have one for Safeway, Star Market, etc. They are all free.

And almost everywhere on Maui now takes either debit or credit cards.

Probably the only place you can%26#39;t use a credit card for groceries is at Costco unless you have one of their Amex cards. I use a Visa all the time at Costco on Maui to help keep purchases in our vacation budget and not in my monthly budget.

Thanks all..I always use a credit card for everything (that%26#39;s one way we got enough frequent flyer miles to get a free trip next May!) and also find it easier than looking for an ATM and safer than carrying much cash. I feel better already!
