Our family will be traveling to Kauai later this year and I%26#39;m wondering if you need an SUV to get around. We%26#39;ld like to do some hiking but we%26#39;re not real hard core, so I don%26#39;t know if an SUV is overkill, or will a car work out fine. Thanks!

Car will work fine. If you have a large family and golf clubs consider a mini van. That%26#39;s what I do when all 5 of us come but otherwise a regular car is fine. Check out rates at costco.com.

A regular car is all you need to get to the trail heads of most of the hiking trails on Kauai. If this is your first trip, it%26#39;s unlikely that you%26#39;ll find anywhere that you%26#39;d need 4 wheel drive. Have fun!
We usually rent a mini-van because we like the extra storage space for golf clubs, beach chairs, etc. Also, my kids like to sit up higher and see out. We are now renting SUVs just because I%26#39;m used to driving one at home and it has more storage than a typical car. Also, the kids can sit up higher, see out and the window goes down! But there is no need for an SUV or 4WD for most of the roads on Kauai.
