Thinking of switching from Sheraton to Hyatt???

I%26#39;m having doubts about the Sheraton and considering the Hyatt. We originally chose the Sheraton because of it being on the great beach, but after seeing some reviews citing lack of maintenance, etc, staying at the Sheraton may be a big mistake for my notice-everything-in-need-of-repair-family!

We currently have an Ocean Front room at the Sheraton - and I am quite sure that we would probably end up getting a Garden View at the Hyatt - still spending quite a bit more... IS IT WORTH IT?

Although the beach is not supposed to be great - the Hyatt%26#39;s pools look outrageous! Kayaking in their lagoon?!

Are Garden Rooms at the Hyatt GREAT? are the CONVENIENT?

I hate making these decisions - please HELP!!!!

Thinking of switching from Sheraton to Hyatt???

LisaBee,

I%26#39;m one of those people that have had nothing but problems with the Sheraton since 1989. I know a lot of people like it but I will never stay there. So I%26#39;m a bit biased. I could go on and on with the different issues I personally experienced (the last one on July 1, 2007) but I%26#39;ll spare you the details.

I%26#39;m also one of those folks that love the Hyatt! If you want a great hotel experience, this is a wonderful place. There are three great restaurants on the property, a great place to watch the torch lighting ceremony at sunset and enjoy a glass of wine, a nice bar with live jazz, a great spa, wonderful shows and other activities, etc. I love the pool and they have salt water lagoon for any smaller children, etc. The have an adult pool area for those folks that want a quieter experience. The grounds and pool at the Hyatt are magnificent. They had to make them very special because the beach is not swimable. It%26#39;s a much larger complex than the Sheraton but we love to stroll around the hotel on our way to/from a restaurant or other activitiy.

We are going to stay at the Hyatt at the end of November in a Garden View Room. I%26#39;m really looking forward to our stay!

Just my 2 cents worth...

Thinking of switching from Sheraton to Hyatt???

Garden rooms at the Hyatt are OK not great. I think the rooms at the Hyatt are not that nice. Most garden view rooms are really far from the pools. Have you seen the pictures on wizardpub.com? We stayed partial OV at the Hyatt and at the Waiohai last year and much preferred the Marriott Waiohai. The pools at the Hyatt are awesome.

Good luck with your decision and have fun.

We%26#39;ve stayed at the Hyatt quite a few times over the years. Many years ago, when the prices weren%26#39;t QUITE as outrageous, we%26#39;d always book the ocean front or ocean view rooms. Now that their prices have skyrocketed, we book the garden view rooms, and then rent an oceanfront cabana for $50 or $100 a day (price depends on cabana type). That way, we can enjoy that semi-private, uninterrupted ocean front view and sound of the waves all day long. Adding $50 to the price of a gardenview room is a LOT cheaper than paying $600+ for that OF view room!

Isn%26#39;t the Marriott Waiohai a time share condo complex? Not a hotel....

I found the garden view rooms at the Hyatt just fine. And it depends on where you are in the hotel to be to ';far'; from the pools. If you get a room on the east wing, the pool is easily accesible. The last time we stayed at the Hyatt (before it was upgraded to the Grand Hyatt), we had a nice garden view, ground floor room only a few yards from the door to the pool and close to the restaurants. Also, the ocean front rooms on the west side are a lot farther from the pool but close to the spa.

Still no idea which hotel we are going to go for... another piece of info that may help you all steer me in making my decision: we will be with our 20 year old son... Does one have a more teen/young adult vibe than the other?

THANKS SO MUCH!!!!

I have never been on the Hyatt property, but we did stay at the Sheraton last month and thought it was great. Mind you, we are not the ultra-picky types. We had a deluxe garden room (ocean front building) and loved it! The beach is lovely and is walking distance to Poipu, if you want to snorkel. Breakfast every morning 100 feet from the beach was heavenly!!

I would definately recommend staying at the The Sheraton. I haven%26#39;t stayed at the Hyatt but we stayed at the Sheraton in Dec 06 for our honeymoon and we loved it. We had no complaints at all. We had ocean view and we stayed in the beach wing. The rooms have recently been renovated and are very nice inside. The beach wing made for a very quick walk to the beach and to the pool. This is important since you dont want to have to lug all of your beach gear on a long walk from your room to the beach/pool and it%26#39;s also close if you want to run back real quick. I did visit the Hyatt and found it to be much larger. It takes longer to get around and get where you%26#39;re going. Also the beach in front of the Sheraton is very nice, calm, and large. We go to Kauai to enjoy the beach. The Sheraton also includes a breakfast buffet which is good and it is open air and you have a beutiful view of the ocean when dining. It also has the free mai tai hourr with live music/entertainment. I can%26#39;t recommend it enough (if you can%26#39;t tell). Some people will always find something to complain about. We didn%26#39;t have any problems and I%26#39;m sure you would enjoy.

The Waiohai is a timeshare property. I believe you can still rent weekly. We stayed there and then 2 nights at the Hyatt. We like the beach at the Waiohai and the pools were very nice. Not just your normal hotel pool but not the Hyatts either. Only has one restraunt and work out room. It also is 2 bedrooms suites and some hotel type rooms but heard the hotel type rooms have negative reviews.

While staying at the Hyatt we felt like we must just stay at the pool and not leave the resort with the attitude like we paid so much hate to not use it. I cant imagine being there for a whole week.

Lisabee...have you inquired about the gift certificates for the Hyatt. I used 2 certificates and then was upgraded free to partial OV that overlooked the pools and ocean. I did not like the layout of the room specifically the bathroom setup. It would have been worse had the kids been with us.

We did not mind moving hotels and glad we did the Hyatt last.

I love the beach at the Waiohai. We stayed there before the hurricane when it was a hotel.

Also, our experiences at the Sheraton have been since 1989. Two problems happened prior to Iniki. And everytime I try to eat there or go for drinks, etc., we get horrible service. This has been going on for 18 years so it%26#39;s not an isolated incident but an ongoing problem for us.

With that said, Lisa%26#39;s 20 year old son may like the Sheraton better. It is right on a great beach. My friend%26#39;s took surf lessons at that beach and loved it. Ask your son if he would prefer a great pool or a beach. He might have better opportunities to meet kids his age at the Hyatt. Or on Poipu Beach.

My kids are younger and they love th pool and slide at the Hyatt. A 20 year old may not be that impressed!

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

I worked 5 years at the front desk at the Sheraton and currently work at the Grand Hyatt -- I have stayed at both properties as well.

My opinion? I think that there is no comparison between the Hyatt and the Sheraton -- while the Sheraton is a lovely ';moderate'; hotel it can%26#39;t compare with the luxury and pure ';Hawaiian feel'; of the Grand Hyatt. It is very much an ';apples and oranges'; question.

Pros for the Sheraton: lovely beach that is usually swimmable. Great restaurant (Shells) which sits right on the beach and has a wonderful view. Much smaller property and more compact -- for some people this is a plus. Lovely staff, many of whom have been with the hotel since its opening more than 20 (?) years ago.

Cons for the Sheraton: ';moderate'; hotel, not luxury. Smaller and older rooms (ocean view haven%26#39;t been refurnished for a few years, the garden rooms have been more recently refurnished) -- small pool area (small pool on garden side in addition to ocean pool).

In close proximity to Koloa Landing Development construction as well as upcoming construction of Sheraton timeshare on adjacent property to the current tennis courts.

Pros for the Hyatt: luxury hotel -- all rooms have been recently refurnished and even garden view rooms are in general, larger than rooms at the Sheraton. Several ';fantasy-type'; swimming pools along with many shops, restaurants, lounges, etc. Located on a lovely long beach (not swimmable however). This hotel has recently been upgraded to a ';Grand'; Hyatt from just the Hyatt Kaua%26#39;i -- and as such has all the amenities that the ';Grand Hyatt'; properties must have. The Hyatt is also at the ';no-construction'; end of Po%26#39;ipu Beach and far away from all the construction and road work.

Cons for the Hyatt: unswimmable beach. Hotel is spread out (not a problem for most people, disliked by some) Hotel is somewhat more isolated (as far as walking) from areas such as Brennecke%26#39;s Beach and Po%26#39;ipu Shopping Village - more than a mile away on a very busy road. Garden/mountain view rooms are lovely inside but view is one over the parking lot to the mountains beyond.

I%26#39;ve tried to be objective here -- I have tons of friends who still work at the Sheraton and are intensely loyal to it -- it has many things to recommend it. But the Grand Hyatt is simply a different class of hotel -- it is hard to compare and not really fair to the Sheraton, which has lower rates than the Grand Hyatt.

I wouldn%26#39;t sneeze at either -- but if given the choice -- I would always choose the Grand Hyatt.

Hope any of this helps!

Malama Pono,

Janet
