Snorkeling suggestions for Poipu

We are staying at the Nihi Kai this November. Other than Poipu Beach itself can you suggest a good snorkeling spot we can walk to from our condos? If not then how about a good spot within reasonable driving distances. We are 4 adults in our 60%26#39;s but all have good snorkeling experience.

Snorkeling suggestions for Poipu

Lawai Beach, by the Beach House restaurant, is a good spot and easy for experienced snorkelers. There%26#39;s a good, sandy get-in spot about midway down the beach. You%26#39;ll want to go out towards the breakers and snoop around the coral heads.

Snorkeling suggestions for Poipu

There%26#39;s a book called Snorkel Kauai that you may want to pick up - it%26#39;s very detailed about the snorkel spots in Kauai and I found it really helpful. I%26#39;ll second the recommendation for the Lawai beach right next to the Beach House restaurant. We saw as many fish there as we did snorkeling anywhere in Kauai, including tunnels.

Though entry is more difficult, the ';beach'; across from Prince Kuhio park (just up the street from the Lawai Beach - on the other side of the Kuhio Shores condos) is known for its turtles.

We saw sea turtles at Poipu Beach, without the aid of a snorkel! Have a great time!

Pretty sure you%26#39;ll find the following website to be at least somewhat helpful (reviews of more than a dozen great places to snorkel from shore; including several in the Poipu area): shorediving.com/Earth/Hawaii/Kauai/index.htm

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

There aren%26#39;t a ton of places here on the South Shore to snorkel other than at Po%26#39;ipu Beach Park itself -- but you can walk down from Po%26#39;ipu Beach Park to in front of the Waiohai property -- that is a pretty popular area and you can walk there easily -- just walk to the west from the park and you can stay right on the beach.

Prince Kuhio beach (the one next to the Beach House restaurant) is also very popular -- it is a very, very small beach but tons of people go snorkeling (as well as diving) there -- you would need to drive down from Nihi Kai but it wouldn%26#39;t take you very long (even with the detour, which MAY be done by November ??).

Other than this there really isn%26#39;t any other area in the immediate area here of Po%26#39;ipu Beach -- you can drive West out to Salt Pond Park in Hanapepe and if you go to the airport side of the park there are lots of areas to snorkel in - shallow almost tidepool areas -- but you would need to be there during high tide as it is almost too shallow to snorkel in during low tide.

We stayed at Nihi Kai a year ago. It is an easy walk to Poipu to snorkle. I concur with the rest of the other suggestions, although we did drive to the other side of the island to snorkle at Ke%26#39;e, it was wonderful!

Remember to bring some water shoes, the bottom is very rough, plus you will be able to use them to walk safely out on the lava at Brenneckes Beach-you can see a ton of sea turtles from the rocks!

Thanks to all of you for the responses. We are really looking foreward to our trip. For those of you who do love to snorkel we would like to share with you something that greatly improved our adventures.

As I mentioned we are in our 60%26#39;s and therefore do need to wear glasses. We bought our own snorkeling goggles with corrections in them and it is so wonderful! They weren%26#39;t that costly and made a world of difference in our experiences. We went to Tahiti last year and got them before that trip and were so glad we did.

Thanks again for everyones input.
