bike/ped path in Kapaa

Has anyone heard how far the construction has gone on the pedestrian/bike path in the Kapaa area? I walked a small section last trip and wonder now if I need to rent a bike to experience the entire path. I am speaking of the concrete path along the coastline.

Looks like it%26#39;s done (mostly) from Kealia Beach down to about Safeway where it ends for now. I%26#39;d guess that at 2-3 miles. that%26#39;s more of a walk than a bike ride to me. If you are willing to switch out onto the main highway for a bit, you could go further down and hit the Lydgate section for a decent bike ride.

The section linking this northern piece to the Lydgate piece is problematic given the heavy development along the coast there. may be a while before it%26#39;s a completed path.

From Kealia north they%26#39;re still working though last time we went there was no problem walking. It just isn%26#39;t a finished concrete path yet.

Agree, the paved area of the bike/ped trail is rather short, but you can ride the dirt track north of kealia past the beach.

We have hiked the area north of donkey beach, and that trail found bikers carrying their bikes over some of the sections.

As far as riding a bike on the main highway, Dave has a good quiet caution there.

We firmly believe that riding a bicycle on the side of our busy main highway would not be what we felt would be safe.

Just heard on KONG radio this morning that some driver was weaving down the road knocking over the orange cones that are placed for the morning contra flow.

At that time Ron Wylie mentioned that kauai has a very high growth of reckless drivers on our narrow roads.

Take that for what it is worth. I agree that walking the paved trail is really rather nice, with wonderful scenery....and you can continue on past kealia. You can also bike it.

It will be super when they finally finish that trial, but you might have a long wait.

Thanks for the info. Might you also know if the road to polihale (forgive me if I did not spell correct) has now been opened ? I heard they closed b/c of rains.

Polihale:

The last word, after a loud protest of the closure of the polihale access road is.....

They re-opoened it, and promised to fix the dirt road, and the restrooms ( which were a mess ).

The local people on kauai use polihale quite a bit, and they let the state officials know of their displeasure.

The powers that be announced that they would find the equipment to take care of the job as soon as possible. At first they said no equipment was available.

As far as was printed in the GIN, the gate is open.

You might however, check on the actual condition of that road for rental car passage once you arrive.

It was a beast many years ago, so do check before attempting it, OK ?

Denny

Thanks, Denny. You are always very informative and were are lucky to have your input and advise.

Trying to get my bearings. We%26#39;ll be staying at Waipouli Beach Resort in June. Is the Safeway mentioned above the one that I understand is right across the street from WBR? That would be VERY nice indeed to have the path start right near our location.

Chris

Chris, yes, the Safeway mentioned is the one across the street from your resort.

From the Waipouli Resort you%26#39;d have to go about 1 block on the main road then go makai into the older neighborhood (about at Coconuts) and use surface streets until you hit the point where the trail begins. I admit I%26#39;m not exactly sure where the trail begins in its new wide, concrete state. There was an older narrow path that ran in there and I just haven%26#39;t walked the new one to see the exact spot they started construction.

Once you are off the main road, it%26#39;s very quiet and an easy walk.
