What is the best route for taking the Road to Hana?

Hello,

We are first time visitors to the island of Maui and would like to know what is the best route to take on the way back from the end of the Road to Hana?

We are staying at the Maui Prince and will be taking the road clockwise, starting early in the AM, with a few long hikes planned.

Past Oheo Gulch we hear that the road gets somewhat risky and trecherous.

Rather than returning back from whence we came, is there another route that we can take which will lead us back toward the Maui Prince without circumventing us too far from the beaten path or too far out of our way?

For instance, does anyone suggest taking the road past Kaupo and picking up 31 to 37, then driving north to Kahalui then back south again on 31 to Wailea? We understand that 31 does not connect between Makena and Kaupo.

Please help!

Thank you

I%26#39;m almost positive that you will have to go back the way you came. From reading some of the other posts the roads sound like they are closed on that south east side of the island that would allow you to continue on. I%26#39;m sure a local will chime in shortly though.

There is a book called Hana Mile by Mile that you should order for several reasons.

It does tell you the sites that you shouldn%26#39;t go, the sites that are dangerous and they rate the sites in the book. I personally wouldn%26#39;t attempt it without something like this to guide me.

I asked a neighbor last week and he said it is still closed.

Yes the road is still closed beyond the `Ohe`o Gulch. To make things easier for folks I created a map that helps put this into perspective. It shows both the temporary Paihi bridge and the Kukui`ula bridge closure.
