Is the weather ever nice during this time of year??

yes

ditto.

We are thinking of splitting our time between poipu and princeville. Is it safer to just stay on the poipu side ?

We stayed in Princeville for two weeks this past Dec 27 - Jan 10. The first few days were a bit cloudy with an occasional shower but then it cleared off and was perfect weather the rest of our stay. The one day it was cloudy we drove south in search of sun and found it to also be rainy in Lihue and Poipu. We kept driving and finally found sun in Waimea. We always stay on the North Shore and have never experienced more than a few passing showers. We just booked our condo for Feb %26#39;09!

If you have more than say 6 days to spend, I%26#39;d split just to save the driving. Say 2-3 days up north and the rest in Poipu. if you are smart and bring minimum clothing (forget the fancy duds on Kauai), moving isn%26#39;t that big a deal relative to spending 1.5 hrs commuting each way when you want to go to the other side of the island.

that time of year Poipu is much more reliable on weather/surf. You may get perfect weather in P-ville or you could have flooding like we had last week.

Today was gorgeous. Nice and sunny. Supposed to be that way all week. Dry, mild trades etc. In London this would be summer! North/west sides expected to have dangerous surf levels though 10-20 ft , while the south is 1-3 ft. Temps 82 days/72 nights all week per KHNL (channel 8) just now.

usual winter caveat. We can have storms in Dec--March that can pretty much wipe out a vacation for a week or more anywhere and everywhere on the island.

My family vacationed on Kauai January 2007. We had an amazing time and absolutely loved the island, however we probably only had 2 truly sunny days out of the 10 we were there. We understood the time of year we were going and that there was a good possibility of rain, however, so we were somewhat prepared for that. It was still a disappointment, though. And it definitely wasn%26#39;t light rain, either, it was true downpours!

With that said, we spent half our time in Poipu and the other half at Hanalei Bay area and didn%26#39;t notice much of a difference in weather. We absolutely adored Hanalei, I%26#39;d go back in an instant. We weren%26#39;t nearly as impressed with Poipu. I%26#39;d completely skip it next time around.

When we visit Kauai again we will spend all our time on the North end of the island and just make sure we go in the drier months.
