vacation rentals in kekaha

I%26#39;ve been looking at some rental cottages in the kekaha area for part of a two week trip (north shore for other part). One concern is route 50 runs right along the beach and hence right by the various cottages. Is there traffic? I won%26#39;t be too happy with significant road noise.

If you are thinking about Waimea Plantation Cottages, it won%26#39;t be an issue at all. The visitor units are all well removed from the road, and traffic is pretty light in the area anyway (you could just about lay down on the center line at night).

WPC is a wonderful experience, and one of the great lodging secrets in the islands. The following is from a study our firm completed regading the facility several years ago:

The fully restored vintage ';plantation era'; cottages offer an atypical, low key, low density, historically themed vacation experience. Many of the cottages were part of an on-site village for workers of the now defunct Kikiaola sugar plantation and mill, others were brought into the project from elsewhere in the region. Most of the wood frame, composition roofed structures contain a single visitor unit ranging in size from a ';hotel room'; to six bedroom home; several have more than one key. Units are handsomely finished with period pieces, exotic woods and wicker furnishings; all have lanais/porches and are landscaped for maximum privacy.

Hotel amenities include a restaurant, day spa, concierge/tour desk, and art gallery (all concessionaire operated), meeting and banquet rooms, swimming pool, sundry/logo store, volleyball court, shuffleboard deck, and beachfront activities. The cottages appear to be in good to excellent condition in consideration of age, the furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF%26amp;E) are competitive with meaningful remaining economic life, and the grounds are well-maintained. The primary guest demographic is West Coast tourists, many of whom are repeat visitors, with a significant Kaamaina segment, and some military and corporate users.

We took my sister-in-law recommendation, and booked a place in Kekaha. She said they really liked it, because it is quieter, and drier than th east or windward side. She didn%26#39;t say anything about alot of roadnoise. Guess we will find out in April.

We stayed at the Liko Kauai Vacation rental house in Kekaha we found on the VRBO website, January 28-31, 2008. The location is at Kioweha and Aukuu, about 2 blocks north of the main highway. Highway noise was not an issue there; the neighborhood was fairly quiet and residential, but we were not there on a weekend. We were looking for a place close to the Waimea Canyon.

The house has 3 bedrooms: one with king bed, one with 2 twins and one with a double bed. There is one bathroom in the hall with the bedrooms. At the other end of the house off the kitchen, there is another shower room and a toilet room. The king bed was fairly comfortable, but the other couple traveling with us did not like either the twin beds or the double bed. The living room is comfortable, but the house is generally old, rundown and not updated. There is a portable dishwasher that was not operational while we were there. The house had not had a thorough cleaning for some time, although a superficial cleaning is apparently done after each guest leaves. The stove is old, but functional, as are the pots and pans. The coffee maker has a rusted hot plate but works, although the water does not make good tasting coffee. The washer and dryer are fairly new and functional.

This might be a good place for a family, especially if it was fixed up a little. There is a small pond in the back yard.

We would probably look around for another house in the area next time we want a place close to Waimea Canyon.
